Taphole Clay

What is taphole clay?

Taphole clay is a refractory material used to seal the taphole. It can be divided into two categories: water clay and water-free clay. The former is used in small and medium-sized blast furnaces with low top pressure and low intensified smelting, and the latter It is used in large and medium-sized blast furnaces with high top pressure and high degree of intensified smelting. Among them, Taphole clay uses clay powder, clay refractory brick crushing particles, and coke powder as the main raw materials, and appropriately adds asphalt, high alumina bauxite, silicon carbide, etc., and uses water as a binding agent. Commonly used waterless Taphole clay raw materials are generally corundum, high alumina bauxite, silicon carbide, clay, and coke powder.

In order to improve the performance of taphole clay and increase its strength and corrosion resistance, raw materials such as metallic silicon, metallic aluminum, sericite powder, and ferrosilicon nitride have been used. The addition of various fine powder and ultrafine powder raw materials has further increased its density and sintering performance. Waterless Taphole clay usually uses tar, dianthracene oil, and resin as binders.

Classification of Taphole clay

Taphole clay can be divided into two types – water taphole clay and water free taphole clay.

Water Taphole Clay

Water as a binder is called taphole clay with water, and organic materials such as tar and resin as a binder are called water free Taphole clay.

The main components of Taphole clay with water are refractory clay, refractory, coke foam, pitch, and water. Mainly used in small blast furnaces (below 150 cubic meters).

Water Free Taphole Clay

The main components of water free taphole clay are coke foam, refractory clay powder, pitch, high alumina bauxite or brown corundum, silicon carbide, sericite, dehydrated anthracene oil.

The capacity of the blast furnace is different, and the ratio when in use is not the same, and the composition is also changed.

Raw material formula and ingredients of taphole clay

Taphole clay composition can be divided into two parts-refractory aggregate and binder.

Refractory aggregates refer to refractory raw materials such as corundum, mullite, and coke gemstones, and modified materials such as coke and mica.

The binding agent is organic materials such as water or tar pitch and phenolic resin, and is also mixed with SiC, Si3N4, expansion agents and additives.

The aggregate forms a matrix according to a certain particle size and weight, and it has a certain degree of plasticity under the adjustment of the binder so that the molten iron can be blocked by the taphole clay.
